Route Setting

Pacific Edge prides itself on the quality of its route setting! Each route is designated by an individual color. The sign at the base of each top-rope wall gives the grade and directions for each route. The routes are graded by the YDS (Yosemite Decimal System).

The top-ropes routes are changed on a five-week rotation. A section of the boulder is changed every two weeks. The lead routes are on a three-month rotation. The creativity that goes into each route is the product of our talented route setting staff.

Route setting according to Devious Dalleske a long time routesetter at PE:

5.0 - 5.8
Straight forward climbing, no tricky or powerful moves.
5.9 Will include a thoughtful move or two, low on power but will require some endurance.
5.10a-b Requires power or delicacy, endurance, and will have quite a few hard moves on it, though you will find rests.
5.10c-d Balance and power required including route reading skills. Routes at this grade are more sustained.
5.11a-b Routes become truly difficult. Hard to read, requiring accurate sequencing or power.
5.11c-d These routes are approaching 5.12 level--no rests, powerful, off balance moves with extremely delicate and balanced sequences. An endurance sprint to the top!
5.12 The same as above only harder!
